It has become overwhelming clear that intake of whey protein is crucial at two time points: Before and immediately after exercise. An exciting new study released this month in the Journal of Amino Acids reported that whey protein timing altered anabolic gene expression and enhanced muscle mass in men. In the study, subjects were randomized to either receive a whey protein shake both immediately before and after exercise or a placebo (just carbohydrates). The men performed resistance training for 21 weeks and had strength and muscle mass analyzed at the end of the study. The group that consumed the protein before and after exercise had greater gains in muscle mass and strength compared to the placebo group. Additionally, the whey protein before/after exercise group had an increase in satellite cell activity! Don’t let you training suffer because of missing that key “anabolic window of opportunity”.
